Fragrance

A fragrant act of love
permeates the air -
she pours it on his feet
and wipes them with her hair.
Extravagant the gift
preparing for the grave
the one who’ll give his all
the fallen race to save.

"What folly is this waste!
There’s much that we could do
to help the poor and needy,
to turn the world to you.
Remember, Lord, you said you’d come
to bring the poor good cheer,
to give the blind their sight,
to set the captives free!
Against all sense of justice,
this needless foolish deed
does naught to bring to humans
the end of human need!"

"She’s done it well and beautiful -
her perfume will embalm
the body given for all of you.
Leave her alone!"

A fragrant act of love
permeates the air -
she pours it on his feet
and wipes them with her hair.
Extravagant the gift
preparing for the grave
the one who’ll give his all
the fallen race to save.

On Easter morn they come
with spices to the tomb.
The rolling door is open -
the body now is gone!
And when they see him risen
in gentle morning light,
the fragrance of his presence
bespeaks them of his life.

So give our love, our all, to him
who reaches out to give
true beauty, love and hope and peace
that all may truly live.
