The Rooster Crowed

The rooster crowed -
whoever thought
the crowing of a bird
would bring
such pain?

His word was true -
I am not strong
to stand beside
the one accused
by false
and lying
tongues.
But
has he found me
false and lying
too?
So brash
and confident
with friends,
so weak within.

The rooster crowed -
the first weak light
of cruel day
on which the Light
of truth and love
would die.

And I can crow
no more!
My only boast
the one who goes
with steadfast love
to meet the cross!
