Good Memories

Memory
is an odd thing.
Somehow
I think I know
all about 11 September,
much more
than I remember
about 25 December.
The visual images,
the shock,
the horror,
have been burnt
into the memory
of that sad September day -
the day that changed
the world.

And yet,
for all my life
we’ve celebrated
Christmas,
shared the love,
told the stories
of the coming
of the Christ child.
Even as we tried
to shut him out,
he changed
the world.

Wherever we see
human inhumanity,
we need to have
good memories
of redeeming grace.
