Image of God

Down the ages
men have crafted
idols –
images of men
and of men’s
imaginings,
weird
and binding
hearts and lives
in devoted
worship.

Yet at the beginning
God created
man –
male and female –
in his image
and likeness,
created to know,
to love,
to reflect
the life
and nature
of the Creator.

At the right time,
God sent
his Son, Jesus –
emptied of glory,
born a man
in the image
and likeness
of the Father.
He lived
and taught
and healed
and died
and rose again
for us –
so we can be
forgiven,
restored
to the true
image of God.
At his baptism
the Spirit came
and the Father’s voice,
“This is my Son
whom I love…”

And now in him
because of him
and his redemptive work,
I can cry,
“Abba! My Father!”,
for I too hear
the Father’s voice,
“This too is my child
whom I love!”
