How Long?

The child,
impatient
for birthday
or Christmas
or the end
of the journey -
How long,
Mummy?

The teenager,
eager for life,
wanting yesterday
what must wait
till tomorrow.

The couple pregnant
with their first child,
counting months
and weeks
and days.

The adult
anxiously
asking the doctor
the prognosis.

And in the sunset years,
life behind,
hope ahead,
still the question -
How long?

For all our days
our times,
Lord,
are in your hands!
