So Great a Love

He loved them,
taught them,
fed them,
healed them -
yet they despised him,
reviled him,
and on a shameful cross
they nailed him!
Still he loved them -
dying and in death
he loved them.
Stronger than death,
rising victorious,
he loved them!
Living now,
he loves now
you and me!

God forgive us -
for still,
too often,
we answer
love with hate!
God forgive us
with that great Love
that took our hate
to death
and lived again
still loving!
And give us love!
Love for love,
for your great Love!
Love for hate,
where others spite!
