Certainty

Nothing
is certain,
they used to tell us,
but death
and taxation.
No matter
how people
minimise
taxation,
mortality
is still
one hundred
percent!

How limited
is that view
by time and space!
There is a God
more certain
than all we see
and touch
and do.
For a time
he came
and lived here
in the person
of his Son,
accepting
our limited life,
our human death.

Ah yes,
it’s certain
that he died –
but by his death
he sealed
the certainty
of God’s love
for sinners,
his will
to forgive
all who trust him.
He sealed
the certainty
of eternal life.

Now we can know
the certainty
of heaven
amid
the uncertainties
of earth!
