The Mayor of Sydney decided that there should be no Christmas Tree outside Sydney Town Hall this year to avoid offence to people of other faiths. But people of other faiths in our multicultural Australia are more offended by her unwillingness to recognise the Christian nature of this season.
For fifteen years a US card company has been bringing out holiday cards to combine Christian and Jewish holidays – Merry Chrismukka!
Jesus was born 2000 years ago. Born a baby in Bethlehem, he grew to manhood in Nazareth. For three-and-a-half years he preached and taught and healed people. Then his enemies had him put to death by crucifixion. That would have been the end of him except as a memory, but on the third day the news started circulating that he is alive. The authorities of the day tried to suppress the overwhelming evidence that it is true.
I think we all know that “Happy Holidays” short-changes us. And the idea of “Merry Who-mas” sounds rather flat. Let’s come right out with it. Christ is born! Born for you! Don’t leave him out! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
