Biblical References: The town where Gabriel announced to Mary that she, a virgin, would bear a son, Jesus, the Son of the Most High (Luke 1.26ff). The town from which Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem for the census (2.4), and to which they returned after their two-year stay in Egypt (Matthew 2.19-23). It was the town where Jesus grew up and worked until his ministry began - and where the people rejected him (Luke 4.14ff). Nazareth had no particular claim to fame - Nathanael doubted whether someone from Nazareth could, in fact, be the promised Messiah (John 1.46)
