Background: The Via Dolorosa (Sorrowful Way) winds through the Moslem Quarter of Jerusalem and then the Christian Quarter. In Byzantine times pilgrims would make their way from Gethsemane to Calvary on the night of Holy Thursday. The route was roughly the same as today's Via Dolorosa. Today there are a number of chapels and plaques marking the route. Historians seriously question whether this was the actual route of Jesus on the way to the cross.
