Holy Land 2001 Caiaphas' House Photos

PB HomeIsrael TourNotesJerusalem Index

Biblical references: When Jesus was arrested by the Temple guards in Gethsemane, he was taken to the house of Caiaphas, the high priest (Matthew 26.57ff; Mark 14.53ff; Luke 22.54ff). The Church of St Peter in Gallicantu (at the crowing of the cock) is said to stand on the site of the house of Caiaphas. Beneath the church is a storage room and a dungeon - now with openings and illumination, but formerly with a hole in the top large enough to lower a prisoner. Jesus may have been held there for a time.
